Water Resources
Purpose
Water is fundamental to life on earth. Water is also vital to domestic, commercial and industrial activities. In England, water supplies are used intensively. The amount of water available per person in England is low in comparison with other western countries. There is a need, therefore, to develop strategies to manage water resources in a sustainable manner to ensure that the various demands on the resource can be met.
Benefits
Human impacts on water resources are multifaceted and cross-sectoral. The way that land is developed and used (which is the key focus of spatial planning) has a significant impact on the water environment.
