Sustainable Tourism
Purpose
Sustainable tourism involves a low environmental impact while generating local income and employment, and conserving local ecosystems. It seeks to be ecologically and culturally sensitive.
Benefits
Tourism is one of the largest and fastest-growing industrial sectors in the world, and it has a variety of impacts on the environment and local communities. In the UK it contributes around 4.5% of gross domestic product (GDP) and 6% of consumer spending. However, there are many concerns over the need for tourism development to be more clearly aligned with the sustainable development agenda.
Audience
Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.
Learning method
Key terms, context, relevance to planning and an extensive list of associated web references are all a part of this comprehensive knowledge builder. Additionally a comprehensive range of further reading is provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. Includes voluntary self assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
