Sustainable Development

Purpose

This module examines sustainable development – a concept that seeks to reconcile, on the one hand, the ability of the environment to provide resources and accept the waste products of consumption and, on the other, the needs of present and future societies for those environmental services.

Benefits

Sustainable development implies the integration of environmental, social and economic objectives, at scales that range from the local to the global. For the planning profession this represents a challenge, but one for which it is perhaps uniquely equipped, with its tradition of dealing with all three issues in order to enhance the quality of life of communities at the local and regional scales.

Audience

Urban, rural and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.

Learning method

A detailed knowledge builder on what is to many a focal subject. It provides an overview of context and background, its relevance to planners, and links to pertinent websites. Additionally a comprehensive range of further reading is provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. It includes a voluntary self assessment exercise for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
