Siltation in Salmon and Trout Rivers
Purpose
In the UK, rivers provide habitat to populations of migratory salmonids such as the Atlantic Salmon , Sea Trout, and the non-migratory Brown Trout . It is thought that siltation of the spawning gravels of these fish is an important factor responsible for reductions in their populations within UK rivers.
Benefits
Learning how and why siltation occurs and how the problem may be tackled is a necessary skill if the UK salmon population is to be restored and its decline halted.
Audience
Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.
Learning method
Action list providing a structured plan of how to avoid or minimise siltation in salmon and trout rivers plus links to appropriate websites. Additionally a comprehensive range of further reading is provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. Includes voluntary self assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
