Public Transport
Purpose
Public transport matters because without it being provided on a reliable basis, at reasonable prices and operated to an appropriate timetable, people are excluded from activities they wish to undertake either: • spatially, because they cannot get there at all • temporally, because they cannot get there at the appropriate time, or • financially, because they cannot afford to get there.
Benefits
The Government has recognised that land use planning has a key role in delivering its integrated transport strategy. By shaping the pattern of development and influencing the location, scale, density, design and mix of land uses, planning can help to reduce the need to travel, reduce the length of journeys and make it safer and easier for people to access jobs, shopping, leisure facilities and services by public transport, walking, and cycling.
