Protected Species
Purpose
In the UK the issue of the protection of wildlife has come to the forefront for a number of reasons. Government has a statutory duty under national and international law to protect wildlife and habitats but it is also under pressure to provide tens of thousands of new homes (with all the built infrastructure they need), roads and factories in a country that is now the second most densely populated in the world after the island of Formosa.
Benefits
Positive planning is central to the achievement of sustainable development and radical measures are needed to ensure that development is capable of adapting to climate change and does not harm the ability of the natural environment to adapt.
Audience
Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.
Learning method
A knowledge builder covering a subject which is to some vexatious and to others focal. It provides an overview of context and background, its relevance to planners, and links to pertinent websites. Additionally a comprehensive range of further reading is provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. Includes voluntary self assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
