Planning Appeals
Purpose
This module provides a brief, ‘entry-level’ examination of planning appeals made under section 78 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 (hereafter referred to as the 1990 Act). It does not give an outline of the provisions relating to other appeals, such as enforcement and special consents appeals, although the procedures are broadly similar.
Benefits
The appeals process is the main mechanism for ensuring fairness and consistency of decision-making in the planning system, for restraining unreasonable behaviour by local planning authorities and for ensuring that the planning policies of central government are followed.
Audience
Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.
Learning method
An invaluable knowledge builder for those involved with planning appeals covering background and context, an explanation of the topic, and the legal and regulatory context. Additionally a comprehensive range of further reading and related websites are provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. Includes voluntary self assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
