Place-making in Scotland
Purpose
This knowledge builder focuses on urban design as a process of making places for people. It provides an introduction to the activity of urban design; defines urban design; discusses knowing and unknowing urban designers; explains why knowing urban design is necessary; presents different traditions of thought in urban design; and discusses what makes a ‘good’ place.
Benefits
This module is of relevance to all those (Scotland and elsewhere) whose actions and decisions, whether knowing or unknowing, contribute to, or detract from, place quality, including, for example, built environment professionals, politicians, accountants, investors, developers, occupiers, and householders.
Audience
Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.
Learning method
An invaluable module offering an understanding of the issues relating to urban design. Examples are drawn from Scotland, but in reality 95% of the content relates to the whole of the UK. Additionally a range of further reading and appropriate websites is provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. Includes voluntary self assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
