Managing Development Plan Inquiries
Purpose
Planning legislation and associated regulations impose on local planning authorities an obligation to hold an inquiry into development plan documents (DPDs) to ascertain that they meet the requirements of legislation, are ‘sound’ and to provide an opportunity to resolve outstanding objections. An inquiry (now referred to as an Examination) is an important check on the plan-making activities of local authorities, ensuring that the public’s right to have its representations heard in front of an impartial Inspector are upheld and that DPDs are revised where appropriate prior to adoption. A DPD Examination is an important procedure in maintaining the integrity and value of the wider planning system.
