Local Development Frameworks

Purpose

The preparation and implementation of development plans by local authorities under procedures established by central government has been the bedrock of the British planning system for well over half a century. A new system of development plans in England was brought into force in 2004, to replace the previous system of structure, local and unitary plans. The new system which this knowledge builder focuses on comprises a regional and a local element, the latter being known as the ‘local development framework’ (LDF).

Benefits

LDFs will become increasingly relevant to all LA planning activities. Likewise, there will be a growing need for all who engage with the planning system – developers, civic groups, the general public – to become conversant with its undoubted complexities. In this, the LAs will have an important role to play, not only in the skill with which they prepare the LDF but in the assistance they provide to their citizens in interpreting and making use of the LDF.

Audience

Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.

Learning method

A detailed knowledge builder which offers a commentary, key terms, context and background plus links to associated websites. Additionally a range of further reading is provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. Includes voluntary self assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
