Listed Buildings
Purpose
The Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 and the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Scotland) Act 1997 provide a framework for protecting buildings of special architectural or historic interest. It provides an additional and separate series of controls to the need for planning permission. These are examined in this action list.
Benefits
Historic buildings are now being recognised not only as historic assets worthy of protection but are increasingly being recognised as having important educational, cultural and tourism functions. These new roles demand that positive management of buildings is required as well as the exercise of formal regulatory controls.
Audience
Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.
Learning method
A comprehensive action list detailing the steps that are needed to be taken when dealing with a listed building, common mistakes to be avoided, and frequently asked questions. Additionally a comprehensive range of further reading is provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. Includes voluntary self assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
