Life Cycle Analysis
Purpose
This knowledge builder focuses on the value of life cycle analysis (LCA). This is a technique that planners should be aware of when considering the environmental impacts of projects, where there is a need to distinguish between impacts arising from construction, manufacture, transport, operation, product use and product disposal.
Benefits
Planners need to be aware of the LCA technique if reviewing work conducted by third parties, or if they wish to adopt ‘life cycle thinking’ as a way of reviewing the environmental consequences of development proposals.
Audience
Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.
Learning method
A knowledge builder which offers a valuable overview of life cycle analysis and its relevance to planning plus links to useful websites. Additionally a comprehensive range of further reading is provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. Includes voluntary self assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
