European Structural Funds

Purpose

This module describes the current structural fund programme for the period 2007- 13. Structural Funds are the European Union’s main financial instruments for supporting social and economic restructuring and reducing disparities between regions. Their purpose is to promote the economic, social and territorial cohesion of the Union.

Benefits

The philosophy of cohesion which underpins Structural Funds reinforces one of the fundamental objectives of the European Union. The Manifestation of this through fund allocation to local programmes has altered significantly for the 2007-13 period. Not only have the funds to accommodate the expansion of the Union from15 to 27 members giving a different spatial bias to Fund allocation, they have also shifted to a more social and economic emphasis in project type, reducing the strong spatial planning emphasis of previous funding rounds.
