Construction aggregates
Purpose
Mineral resources are important national assets. Their extraction and use makes a major contribution to our economic well-being and quality of life. However extraction, processing and transportation of minerals have significant impacts for the environment and quality of life. Construction aggregates are needed in very large quantities for building, construction and the maintenance of infrastructure. They therefore provide the largest challenge to planners of all minerals worked from the land in the UK.
Benefits
The approval and regulation of sites for extraction of construction aggregates is a major element of planning, mainly in rural areas. Planners have the task of balancing demand for essential industrial raw materials with policies for preserving and protecting the countryside.
Audience
Minerals and local planners, regional planners, and all others wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.
Learning method
A knowledge builder that provides a general overview of minerals issues and their relevance to planning and a selected range of further reading for those who wish to expand their understanding of the subject. Includes voluntary self-assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD). Readers are strongly advised to first read Minerals, which deals with the general principles of minerals planning, before reading this unit, which concentrates on aspects that are particularly relevant to construction aggregates.
