Communications and PR in Planning
Purpose
This knowledge builder considers public relations (PR). PR is a discipline which has not typically been linked to the planning process. However, with the Planning Bill currently being considered by Parliament and proposing an increasing need for community engagement at all levels and stages of the planning process, it is a skill which is fast becoming a vital component of the planner’s repertoire. The developing role of planners in spatial planning and in the creation of sustainable communities is requiring planners to adopt, and expect, communications best practice at all levels and in all contexts.

If planners take on board the principles of effective public relations and use them as an integrated part of how they approach their role as a planner, they will be reflecting government aspirations for the future now. In doing so, planners can be both more effective and efficient as the decisions they make will have taken into account the varying needs of investors, developers, other service providers, business and the community. What has traditionally been seen as enlightened planning practice is beginning to be seen as a prerequisite of the planning process.
