Car-free Housing Development
Purpose
Reducing private vehicle use is highly significant in improving both local and global environmental conditions and in promoting active travel that is health-giving. While car-free housing is likely to be of minor significance to many areas it is important in large, dense cities and its popularity among occupants, local authorities and developers is increasing and likely to spread. More green space in developments resulting from a loss of parking is also good in adapting cities to dangerous climate change and for citizen well-being.
Benefits
Car-free housing saves land and building costs, vital in very dense urban areas, and so is potentially desirable for developers and local authorities.
Audience
Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.
Learning method
This topical knowledge builder considers the alternative means being considered to develop new housing, either in single blocks or as wider areas, into communities free of cars. Additionally a range of further reading is provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. Includes voluntary self assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
