Background to British Development Planning
Purpose
This Knowledge Builder outlines the British experience of development planning and the relationship between the development plan and other types of plan, and provides a commentary on some of the current issues surrounding the appropriate form and function of development plans.
Benefits
Development plans are the cornerstone of the British planning system. Nearly a fifth of planners are employed in preparing them – only development control occupies a higher proportion of the RTPI membership. The development control function and most development control decisions derive their justification from the existence of the development plan.
Audience
Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.
Learning method
An invaluable Knowledge Builder which provides an extensive overview of the history of development planning through the various planning acts. Additionally a comprehensive range of further reading and web site links are provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. Includes voluntary self assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
