Agricultural Buildings and Conversions
Purpose
This module considers the policy relating to the conversion of agricultural buildings. The principles of sustainable development encourage the re-use of buildings. While there is a long-standing presumption against new buildings in the countryside, agriculture and forestry have had exemptions for new buildings and encouragement to diversify their economic base.
Benefits
The module highlights the role of the planning system in reconciling two opposed policy positions of both restricting new development and encouraging the re-use of redundant buildings.
Audience
Urban and regional planners and all those wishing to build and assess their knowledge of the topic.
Learning method
An issue of relevance to planners, developers and farmers, the planning debate surrounding the issue is covered in some detail in this knowledge builder. Additionally a range of further reading and appropriate websites is provided for those who wish to become expert in the subject. Includes voluntary self assessment for recording continuous professional development (CPD).
